Make a basket that can hold some personal treasures!  This is a super beginner-level coil basketry workshop using a traditional coil technique.  Each weaver will learn to start a coil and shape it into their own unique vessel using a variety of fibers:  twine, raffia, yarn, and threads.  Weavers are encouraged to create their own designs or patterns while inspired by a selection of colors and textures.  The possibilities are endless!  Attendees are welcome to bring their own fibers that they imagine mingled into their weave.

You will learn

  • How to begin a coil by creating a Magic Circle
  • Using the Blanket stitch to bind and build a coil basket
  • How to change fiber
  • How to tuck away loose fiber ends
  • How to finish a basket

Skill requirements: No previous experience required.

Supply Fee: $12 Paid to the instructor the day of the class

Instructor: Lisa Young

About the Instructor:

Lisa Young has been weaving baskets and bowls, and tucking little treasures in them since she was a young girl.  Her fascination began when visiting a family friend and noticing a row of miniature pine needle coiled baskets displayed on the piano.  She knew how to coil a basket by the next day!  Today, Lisa’s aesthetics in her basketry are informed and influenced by her background in art history, folk culture & traditions, her travels, and upbringing in domestic arts (crochet, sewing, loom weaving).  Lisa has been teaching art to children and adults for over ten years, focusing on basket weaving for the past five.
